Commish fines player for placing telephone call
October 23, 2011
To some, the NFL stands for the No Fun League whilst to others it stands for the National Football League. Add to the list of possible acronyms the No Family League.
While in London for today’s NFL match up between the Chicago Bears and the Glazier owned Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handed a player a stern $10,000 for calling his wife while his game was still in progress. Pittsburgh Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu had recently been involved in a play that brought him and the opposing team’s Running Back (Maurice Jones-Drew) together. The result of the play saw Polamalu demonstrate symptoms consistent with having a concussion.
After being treated by team doctors, Polamalu borrowed a mobile phone from a staff physician to dial his wife to assure her that he was alright.
Whilst the rules of the NFL are clear involving use of telephones on the sidelines, the player in question was not spouting off on twitter, nor was the injured player calling into a local talk show from the sidelines as other players have done in the past. The player had been injured and was attempting to set the mind of his family at ease – thus being a family man. The spirit of the law is to reduce and prevent sideline antics involving a phone. The Steelers safety does not plan to appeal his fine. You can bet, however, that there will be discussion behind the scenes regarding the spirit of the law and the letter of the law within the National Football League in the upcoming days and weeks.
Troy Polamalu is active for today’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, which is a rematch of Super Bowl XLIII in which the Steelers were victorious by a 27-23 margin. This was amongst one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever.
